Dogs interpret the world based on what
they smell. How many of you have observed your dog, nose to the ground, happily
following some scent to and fro across a field, lawn, or parking lot? Dogs
naturally have this wonderful ability to distinguish and follow one scent over
all the millions of smells around them. Tracking involves teaching the dog to
distinguish the tracklayer’s scent, and follow it to the article left on the
track laid by the tracklayer.
When we train the dogs to track we mark
the track and know where it goes. In tracking tests only the start will be
marked so you won't know where the track goes. Two skills you will need to learn
are to read your dog’s individual style of tracking, and how to handle your dog
while they are tracking.
Patience and trusting your dog are the
keys to a good tracking relationship with your dog.
